Artist Statement

I create art as a way to contemplate emotional connections to the spaces in which we dwell. The concept of home has a meaningful and emotional weight that depends on a sense of belonging, comfort, intimacy, and safety. There is value and emotional significance that we designate to the objects throughout our home, and a distinct boundary between what we consider “home” and “not home”. I aim to shift my audience’s sense of home beyond the traditional borders of their dwelling space to encompass the non-traditional spaces we inhabit, including the natural world, the cosmos, and our own bodies.

By pushing the boundaries of what we define as home I hope that the emotional ties associated with the definition will extend beyond traditional boundaries and connect us with the grander spaces we inhabit. I believe our connection to the natural world, the cosmos, and ourselves is a catalyst for empathetic growth. Vulnerability, intimacy, and hospitality come with sharing your home with others, and by retracing the boundaries we create, I hope the emotional ties and sense of protection we feel for the objects and inhabitants we share our home with will extend to the natural world, and allow my audiences to feel a deeper sense of connection and belonging to their surroundings, no matter where they are.
